✦ Three Card Tarot Reading ✦
What Do the Cards Reveal?
Focus on your question, then draw your three cards. The universe has a message for you.
How to Use the Three Card Tarot Reading
This free reading uses the 22 cards of the Major Arcana, the part of the tarot deck that deals with life’s bigger themes: beginnings, choices, endings, luck and inner change. The artwork comes from the classic Rider-Waite deck, published in 1909 and now in the public domain. Each time you draw, three cards are chosen at random and laid out in a simple Past, Present and Future spread.
Step by step
- Pick one question. Open questions work best, such as “What do I need to understand about my job right now?” rather than “Will I get the job?”
- Take a breath and focus on it for a few seconds before you press Draw Your Cards.
- Read the cards in order. The first card shows what led you here, the second describes where you stand today, and the third points to where things are heading if nothing changes.
- Read the story, not just the cards. The summary under the spread connects the three meanings into one message.
- Write down one action you could take this week based on what you read.
What the Three Positions Mean
Past
The influences, decisions or feelings that brought you to this point. It often explains a pattern you are still repeating.
Present
The energy around you right now: what is asking for your attention, and what you may be overlooking.
Future
The most likely direction if the current pattern continues. It is a tendency, not a fixed outcome — the point of a reading is that you can still change course.
Draw Cards to See His Current Mood
Many people use this reading to understand someone else: a partner, a crush or an ex. Tarot cannot read another person’s mind, but it can help you reflect on the energy between you and on what you might be missing. To use the spread for a question about him (or her, or them), focus on that person while you draw and read the three cards like this:
- Card 1 — What shaped his mood. Recent events, pressure or feelings that led him to where he is now.
- Card 2 — His current mood. The emotional tone he is carrying today: open, distant, confused, hopeful or busy with something else.
- Card 3 — Where it is heading. The most likely direction if nothing changes, and what you can do on your side.
Keep the question open, for example “What is his current mood toward me?” or “What does he need right now?” instead of “Does he love me?” Cards like The Lovers, The Star or The Sun point to warmth and openness; The Hermit, The Hanged Man or The Moon suggest he is withdrawn, uncertain or thinking things over; The Tower or Death show that something is changing quickly. The most useful part of the reading is usually what it reveals about your own feelings and the next step you can take.
Tips for a More Useful Reading
- Ask the same question only once a day. Drawing again and again until you like the answer turns reflection into noise.
- Notice your first reaction to each card. Relief, resistance or surprise usually says as much as the meaning itself.
- Combine it with your daily horoscope. Your sign’s reading for today describes the planetary weather; the cards help you reflect on how you want to respond to it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this tarot reading free?
Yes. There is no sign-up and no limit, although one focused reading a day tends to be the most meaningful.
Why only the Major Arcana?
The 22 Major Arcana cards carry the deck’s broadest themes, which makes them easier to interpret in a quick three-card spread. A full 78-card deck adds the Minor Arcana, which describe day-to-day details.
Can tarot predict the future?
Tarot is best used as a tool for reflection, not as a guaranteed prediction. Treat what you draw as a prompt to think about your situation from a new angle. New to the cards? Read our Tarot for Beginners guide.
